I have been asked by my manager to complete the care certificate due to being new in the social care role as part of training for the role. Is this acceptable? | QCS

Hi Sheila, I am a newly appointed social care assessor who has been working in health for nearly 20 years as a health rehabilitation support worker and more recently a senior occupational therapy technician. I have an NVQ 2 and two NVQ 3s, 1 in care and 1 in AHP.

I have been asked by my manager to complete the care certificate due to being new in the social care role as part of training for the role. Is this acceptable?

Hi Georgina,

Yes, it is acceptable. The Care Certificate is an agreed set of 15 standards that define the knowledge, skills and behaviours expected of specific job roles in the health and social care sectors and should form part of a robust induction programme.

The orientation to any new role is an important part of the induction process and therefore aspects of it are relevant to any new employee starting in a role however experienced they may be. If you are new to the Care sector, then all aspects of the Care Certificate should be covered comprehensively.

If you have previous Care Sector work experience and gained the knowledge, skills and behaviours required in any of the standards from this, then the Registered Manager or their competent nominee should be able to confirm this through an evaluation and assessment review process with you of your qualifications and experience.

This would identify where you satisfactorily meet the standards and also any areas or gaps which would need to be addressed.

Hope this helps!

Best Wishes.

Sheila
