Is it necessary to keep a register of residents? | QCS

Do we still need to have a register of residents? We used to have to check this at midnight – it was part of the fire risk?

Dear Anne,

What a very interesting question. I certainly haven’t thought about the register that we all used to keep for some long time and I do not believe that there is a specific requirement as there once was for you to keep a register.

Having said that it is essential that the person in charge does at any given time have the full knowledge of who is in the building. This of course is why all visitors have to sign in and out.

How you achieve the knowledge regarding residents is up to you, so you do not need to keep a register at midnight every night but in case of emergency you need to have a method of being certain who is in the building and who is on holiday or spending the night with family or in hospital for instance.

Thank you for your question.

If anyone comes back to me about this with further information or advice I will let you know.

Best wishes,

Sheila
