Dentists need to prepare for CQC inspection as regulator plays catch up on targets
CQC behind on targets - so it ups them 35%
According to CQC figures for Q1/2012 the regulator is behind with targets for inspections. Dentists are a key group where inspection shortfalls are occurring. The target given in their ‘Annual Report and accounts 2011/2012’ stipulated that there would be one scheduled inspection of 15% of those dental locations which were registered by 1st October 2011.
However, in new targets contained in the ‘CQC Business Plan 2012/13’, the Commission has upped the target considerably, stating that it will perform inspections of all dental care locations once every two years. This means that 50% of dental locations will be inspected each year - an increase of 35% over the target for 2011/2012.
Raising the regulator’s game
With 8,112 primary dental care providers in 10,130 locations, this suggests 5,065 inspections need to be carried out every year. This means every week on average around 100 dental locations will undergo scrutiny to ensure CQC compliance.
To meet this ambitious increase in inspections, the CQC is recruiting 200 health and care professionals over the remainder of this financial year. There has been considerable criticism of the regulator’s past performance and there can be little doubt that increased inspection targets are a clear demonstration that it is raising its game.
