Health and Social Care providers have a duty of care to ensure that they promote and protect a service user’s oral health and this includes making sure oral care forms part of a service user’s assessment and care plan.

Meeting Regulation 9 of the Health and Social Care Act

In maintaining a service user’s oral health, providers are adhering to Regulation 9, Person Centred Care, of the Health and Social Care Act. This regulation states that a provider must meet the care and treatment needs of service users, by regularly assessing their needs and preferences. In relation to oral care an assessment must be completed to determine the level of oral support required by the customer and an oral care plan frequently updated to meet their needs. In conjunction with this, use of the Oral Care Mini-Audit Tool will support you in ensuring that oral care matters within your service.
