Legionella Policy and Procedure

Health and Safety Health & Safety Region: | Reference: GCH05

This policy has been reviewed with content updated and additional procedures to reflect Legionella risks during the coronavirus outbreak included. Risks have been added from Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other waterborne pathogens when water outlets have not been used or flushed regularly due to temporary closure of the Practice, branch surgery or consulting rooms. Existing references have been reviewed and updated with new references added.

This policy outlines the approach to health and safety covering non-clinical, non-patient facing activities associated with the provision of primary medical services in a general practice setting. The policy scope excludes clinical/nursing incidents which would be covered by professional indemnity insurance. The policy has been updated to have more detailed content focusing on the implications for patients, users and contractors because “at work” actually means ‘on the premises’ and ‘because of what the practice does’. More information and signposting on reporting and notification requirements has also been included.
