David Beckingham Mental Health Specialist

David Beckingham is a self-employed independent trainer, and is also an honorary lecturer with the University of Cumbria. His professional background is as a social worker and he has worked in care homes for older people in Cumbria. David’s main area of expertise is in mental health . Prior to becoming self-employed he was a Staff Development and Training Officer with Cumbria County Council, both commissioning and delivering training to mental health workers and others in statutory and independent sector organisations.

He has considerable experience as a team leader of mental health social work teams in Lancashire.David has also been employed as a mental health policy officer. Amongst the projects that David was involved with was working with a group of staff in a residential home for people with mental health problems, in moving towards an independent supported tenancy model. David has a particular interest in supervision of staff in multi-disciplinary health and social care settings. He undertook a course on Staff Development and Job Consultation offered by Lancashire County Council in conjunction with the University of York. He has also undertaken courses run by Tony Morrison in Manchester who developed a model of supervision based on adult learning theory. David has delivered training based on this model throughout Cumbria, both to supervisees and supervisors in health and social care.

David has taught the City and Guilds Certificate in Community Mental Health Care to a number of groups of workers in Cumbria who are involved in working with people with mental health problems, including care home and day centre staff. He has also delivered training on mental health awareness to housing workers in the North West.

David has been involved extensively in training on mental health legislation. He was part of a programme delivering a series of presentations on recent changes to the Mental Health Act. David has been part of the teaching team on the University of Cumbria’s Masters level course for Approved Mental Health Professionals since the course received approval in 2009. David was involved in preparing the University for an inspection of this course by the General Social Care Council in 2011, by compiling evidence from user and carer groups, past and previous students, and local employers. David has also delivered training on aspects of the Mental Health Act 1983 and the Mental Capacity Act 2005 elsewhere in Cumbria. He has developed particular training packages on writing reports for Mental Health Tribunals, and on Guardianship as a framework for care and treatment of people with mental disorder. David has recently delivered training sessions to GPs and Police and Ambulance staff on aspects of the Mental Capacity 2005.

David has also been involved in policy development on staff supervision, and procedures for receipt of people into guardianship under the Mental Health Act.

As well as being a professionally qualified social worker and registered with the Health and Care Professions Council, David holds a postgraduate Certificate in Education (post-compulsory sector). As a training provider David has been endorsed by the College of Social Work.
