Maintaining accurate, secure, and up-to-date records is crucial for safeguarding individuals receiving medication support, as well as the care workers providing it.
Social care providers are required by The Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014 to keep detailed records of medications for each person under their care.
Medication support means any assistance that helps individuals manage their medications effectively. This can include:
- Reminding individuals to take their medications
- Assisting with removing medications from packaging
- Administering some or all medications
When supporting individuals with their medications, it’s important to follow the ‘6 Rights (R’s) of Medication Administration’:
- Right Person: Ensure the medication is given to the correct individual.
- Right Medicine: Verify that the correct medication is administered.
- Right Route: Make sure the medication is given via the correct method (e.g., oral, topical).
- Right Dose: Administer the correct dosage.
- Right Time: Give the medication at the correct time.
- Person’s Right to Decline: Respect the individual’s right to refuse medication.
