Domiciliary care workers have been added to a list of jobs that can claim tax relief for costs associated with cleaning their uniform.

Those eligible can now find out what the flat rate expenses they can claim tax relief on for clothing and tools, if they are an employee.

Previously, it was unclear whether domiciliary staff were eligible, but following a request from the Homecare Association, the words ‘domiciliary care workers’ have been added to table that lists the industries, jobs and how much tax relief you can claim.

What you can claim tax relief on

The Government says you can claim tax relief on flat rate expenses if you’re employed by someone and you:

  • Clean your work uniform
  • Spend your own money on repairing or replacing small tools you need to do your job

You cannot claim tax relief if your employer provides a laundering service, and you choose not to use it and wash your uniform yourself.
