Hi Sheila,

How can I celebrate Christmas in a multi-cultural home?

Many thanks,

Carole

Dear Carole,

UK is such a multi cultural society now and therefore there are many different festivals to celebrate!

Of course you will celebrate Christmas in your care home and why not discuss with your residents and staff celebrating some of the other great festivals too?

For instance:

  • One of the great Hindu celebrations, Diwali;
  • The Jewish Festival of Lights, Hanukkah;
  • Chinese New Year;
  • Islam celebrates Eid.

You could ask members of the various cultures locally to help and advise you with the celebrations.

I think that it is important for residents to be welcome to join in with any celebrations no matter what the religion or culture. I know some homes that celebrate not just cultural or religious events but national days too!

Best wishes.

Sheila
