Qualifications for domiciliary care manager

Hi Sheila

In applying for a job as a care manager for a private sector Domiciliary Care in the community, the requirement of a qualification advertised was for a diploma level 5 in health and social care . I have Level 5 in Management and Development (with the Institute of Leadership and Management) would this qualification qualify for registering as the care manager? - Anne

Hi Anne,

You may find the following CQC document helpful:  "Qualifications and continuing professional development requirements for registered managers and for the practitioners they supervise"

There is also plenty of helpful information on the Skills for Care and National Skills Academy for Social Care's websites.

What the CQC guidance says is:

“Registered managers of regulated activities must have the necessary qualifications, skills and experience.

When applying to be a new registered manager, applicants should hold, or be working towards, an appropriate qualification as advised by Skills for Care. The role of a registered manager is very challenging and increasingly complex. Previously gained qualifications, skills and experience will significantly support their competence in this important leadership role.

Skills for Care advise having the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and Children and Young People's Services, choosing the pathway:

  • Management of Adult Services or
  • Management of Adult Residential Services.”

It's possible that whilst the ILM Level 5 qualification could support the application, in itself it does not on its own cover all the elements that would now be expected to be held by a registered manager.
