Dear Senga,
We, at our care home have toileting rounds where we help residents to the toilet and change people’s incontinence pads. I am keen to help people with incontinence problems do you have any advice?
Hello Paula,
That is good to know that you are trying to support people with their independence and help with continence.
There is lots we can do to help people such as ensuring there is adequate signage (both the written word and a pictorial representation), not being able to find a toilet can result in an incontinence episode.
If they use a mobility aid, ensure this is next to them as urgency is often experienced and can be a cause of incontinence.
The Care Inspectorate produced guidance, Promoting continence for people living with dementia and long term conditions, which can be found here.
That will give you some ideas to try, good luck.
Regards
Senga
