Should I have a policy on staff attending service user funerals?

It’s not generally considered necessary to have a formal policy that either confirms or denies staff attendance at funerals. Ultimately, it comes down to what is feasible at the time and the wishes of the service user and their family.

As a rule of thumb, if you, as a provider, can meet the following criteria, there should be no reason to refuse a request for staff to attend a service user’s funeral:

  • You can meet the needs of the business and release staff to attend
  • Attendance is in line with the wishes of the service user and their relatives
