Hello Sheila,
I have 8 years experience in care homes and supported living environments. Having management experience and level 5 in management, level 3 in health and social, I’m passionate about delivering person centred care, choice dignity and respect, I have found it difficult to promote this in larger homes which frustrated me. I decided to leave but through my dedication towards the residents I cared for, I had family members approaching me wanting support at home as their PA.
What advice could you offer me or links to give me information as to how I stand on people employing me? What safeguards do I need to be aware of and do I need to be registered if it’s solely me providing support in their own homes?
Thank you for any help in all the above
The Skills for Care website has an information hub on working as a PA.
The hub says that it contains all sorts of information about being a PA, finding work and support as well as other useful resources you may need and it certainly does.
Topics covered include:
- What is a PA?
- Finding work and support
- Understanding social care
- Understanding health care
- Managing risk
- Sorting out problems
- Case studies
You can find this information plus much more on the Skills for Care website: http://www.skillsforcare.org.uk/Employing-your-own-care-and-support/Information-hub.aspx
There is also some interesting pieces about PAs on the Social Care Institute for Excellence website starting at: http://www.scie.org.uk/publications/ataglance/ataglance14.asp
I am sure all that you need to know on these two websites.
Best wishes.
Sheila
