Primary Care COVID-19 Vaccination Programme

With new vaccination centres opening this week, the pace of vaccinating as many people in the priority cohorts as quickly as possible continues to grow at an amazing rate, whilst COVID-19 pressures across all health and care sectors are intensifying.

Guidance and resources are available on the NHS England website and also on the FutureNHS Collaboration Platform but here is an update on the current situation:

  • Eligible Patients (in priority cohorts) who haven’t Yet had the Vaccine
    1. Letters are being sent to people aged 80 or over who have not yet received a vaccination and live a 30 to 45 minute drive from one of the seven new sites and explain how they can book a slot if they haven’t already got an appointment. Example communications and informational materials are available on the FutureNHS website
  • Freeing up Practices to Support COVID-19 Vaccination
    1. NHS England and NHS Improvement have written to GP Practices to explain how they will further support GPs, Practice teams and PCNs to advance the vaccine rollout which includes:
      • CCGs taking steps immediately with respect to prioritisation of work
      • Further temporary funding for PCN Clinical Director support
      • Minor Surgery DES income protection until March 2021
      • The QOF Quality Improvement domain protected in full at 74 points per Practice until March 2021
      • The 8 prescribing indicators within QOF income protected, on the same basis as the existing 310 points which have been income protected
      • Appraisals can be declined during this period, or use the revised, shortened, supportive 2020 model
  • Oxford Astra/Zeneca (AZ) Vaccine
    1. The priority setting for the Oxford Astra/Zeneca (AZ) vaccine delivery at present is in care homes; all PCNs should be maximising use of AZ in their care homes as it arrives
  • National Protocol for COVID-19 mRNA Vaccine BNT162b2 (Pfizer/BioNTech)
    1. The National protocol was updated on 10 January 2021
  • Vaccination of Frontline Health and Social Care Workers
    1. An update has been produced with guidance on the immediate requirement to vaccinate frontline health and social care workers, ensuring maximum uptake of vaccination and timely, equitable access across staff groups
